War Pieces

Soldiers have seen it all
innocent lives lost, their comrades blown
into pieces in the name of peace; they leave
one way and come back a stranger
to themselves and their families, they’re trying
to gather the puzzle pieces of their old worlds
by finding some resemblance to “normal.”

There’s no escaping the demons;
night times are the worse—coping with
the distress that comes along with fighting
on the battlefield—the memories
keep reappearing long after the war is over,
medication is useless and only covers up
the symptoms; Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
takes a massive chunk out of them, it’s hard
to function when the trauma
gets ingrained in their brains.
