I Believed The Lies

I’ve waited for phone calls that never came,
looked for faces in a crowd that never showed up,
and dreamt of a love story that never happened
according to the fairytales in a book; I didn’t think
I was worth his time, or that I was pretty enough,
or smart enough; these are the lies I believed
when relationships didn’t work out,
bought and sold by the enemy
as a disadvantage and spoonfed with a smile;
I ate it all up without asking questions.
