Second-Best

I know firsthand what feeling like a failure
feels like, it got whispered in my ear
that nothing I did was ever good enough,
that I wasn’t good enough, and that’s how
I’ve lived my life as second-best. I’ve let fear
stand in the way of my greatness; I didn’t fight
to accomplish the level of education
or professional success I knew I could achieve
with perseverance—I didn’t fight hard enough,
I gave up when things got too hard
for my weak mentality.
