“Prison Life”

“Prison life”,
I know what it’s like,
to be stuck behind bars
in wide open spaces.
To be held without bail.

I know what it was like
to be with someone who
constantly put me under a microscope,
nothing I did was ever right in his eyes

He was an energy draining,
life-sucking kind of man.
I was being constantly hauled off to jail
for crimes I did not commit.
I was held hostage in my home.
I was tried and convicted
despite no evidence being presented.

I was being denied parole
with each review of my model citizenship status,
yet none of it was ever convincing enough
to grant me my freedom.
